Full Tilt – Pokerstars and Absolute Poker Fraud Charges

April 16th, 2011 by Poker Tips No comments »

The founders of three of the world’s best known online poker companies, one of which has offices in Dublin, were among 11 people charged by the US in a case that seeks at least $3 billion in forfeitures and penalties.

Pokerstars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker were yesterday served with indictments including charges of bank fraud, money laundering and illegal gambling.

PokerStars, based on the Isle of Man, Full Tilt Poker is based in Cherrywood, Dublin and Absolute Poker of Costa Rica are the leading online poker sites doing business with US customers, according to the indictment.

Prosecutors allege that after the US enacted a law in 2006 barring banks from processing payments to offshore gambling websites, PokerStars, Full Tilt and Absolute Poker worked around the ban to continue operating in the US.

The internet poker market was worth $5.1 billion last year, 7.1 per cent higher than in 2009, according to H2 Gambling Capital, which supplies data on the industry.

The global online gambling market now is about $30 billion. None of the poker company principals indicted are in the US and they haven’t been arrested, Mr Bharara’s office said.

Those charged include Isai Scheinberg and Paul Tate of PokerStars; Raymond Bitar and Nelson Burtnick of Full Tilt Poker; and Scott Tom and Brent Beckley of Absolute Poker.

Michele Clayborne, a spokeswoman for Full Tilt, didn’t immediately return a voice-mail message left at her office seeking comment.

Dublin based Pocket Kings is a subsidiary of and service provider to Full Tilt Poker. It employs some 700 people at its offices in Cherrywood.

Pocket Kings accounts for the 12 months to the end of April 2009 show the company’s pretax profits declined by 26 per cent from €8 million to €5.9 million. Its gross profit fell 5 per cent from €47.1 million to €44.7 million.

The poker companies named in the indictment are accused of using fraudulent means to circumvent federal laws and “trick” banks into processing the payments on their behalf.

In one instance, after US banks and financial institutions detected and shut down multiple fraudulent bank accounts used by the betting websites in late 2009, Mr Scheinberg and Mr Bitar developed a new processing strategy that didn’t involve lying to banks, prosecutors said.

They allegedly concealed the money they received from gamblers by disguising it as payments to hundreds of non- existent online merchants purporting to sell items online such as jewellery and golf balls.

Of the billions of dollars in payment transactions that the poker companies tricked the U.S. banks into processing, about one-third of the funds went directly to the poker companies as revenue for so-called “rake” charges to players on almost every poker hand played online, prosecutors said.

PokerStars, Full Tilt and their payment processors persuaded the principals of a few, small local banks facing financial difficulties to engage in such processing in return for multimillion dollar investments in the banks, the US said.

Poker Tips For Beginners

July 24th, 2010 by Poker Tips No comments »

The most valuable advice I could give to a person who wishes to enter the world of online poker would be to first learn the basics of the game. Read books, talk with friends and watch shows such as Poker After Dark or High Stakes Poker. This will give you the foundations to become a competent poker player, both online and offline.

Next I would advise you to create an account with any reputable poker site, personally I would reccommend Full Tilt or Pokerstars. Now days nearly all the mojor poker sites offer a initial deposit bonus, usually around 100%. The next step is probably the most important advice I could give, instead of practicing at the ‘play money’ tables dive in at the deep end and begin playing the game of your choice at 0.01/0.02 or 0.02/0.05 levels. This will give you an authentic learning experience compared to the unrealistic environment of the play money tables where people rarely care about losing all of their chips. You may experience a small loss at first but it will definitely be worth it for the valuable experience you will gain.

Finally, apply for rakeback so that even if you have a small losing or break-even week you could possibly be a small winning player due to the rakeback you’ll recieve.

Jungleman12 To Participate in Durrrr Challenge?

July 21st, 2010 by Poker Tips No comments »

After a slow few weeks in online poker due to the WSOP the action is starting to gain momentum on Full Tilt. This week online superstar Tom Dwan sat down with unknown player Jungleman12 for some Heads Up No-Limit Holdem. They played for just under an hour at 100/200 blinds with Durrrr posting a small loss. It was a pretty uneventful session until the two players stopped playing and began communicating in the chat box. The following conversation ensued:

durrrr: ok gg
jungleman12: gg
durrrr: y dont u take challenge
durrrr: since u never lose to me
jungleman12: i will prob
jungleman12: maybe
jungleman12: isnt bt next or something?
durrrr: i can do 2 at once
durrrr: ship ivey 500k n we will work out details

durrrr: get my aim from someone
jungleman12: ok
durrrr: i wanna crank out at least 2 of em before london if poss
jungleman12: ill talk to you over aim before doing it
durrrr: we could obv play in like 2 weeks
jungleman12: k

Anyone unfamiliar with the trial the rules are as follows:
The challenger puts up $500,000 to Tom Dwan’s  $1,500,000 and the two players have to play 4 tables of Holdem or PLO for 50,000 hands. They also must play at 100/200 blinds or over.
At the end of the challenge whoever is ahead, even if it’s just by $1, gets to keep everything.

Its not surprising that this news has sent the online poker world wild as a match between these two online giants would be a railbirds heaven.

2010 No-Limit Holdem Main Event (WSOP)

July 17th, 2010 by Poker Tips 1 comment »

This years World Series of Poker is coming to an end and with that comes the main event, the $10,000 dollar buy in No-Limit Holdem Championship. As I type this only 21 players remain with the final 9 having to wait until November to learn their fate. This year saw the 2nd highest ever attendance with 7319 players making their way to the rio casino in Las Vegas for this huge event. All the big names such as Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, Doyle Brunson and Daniel Negranu are out leaving a field of amateurs, internet pro’s and lesser known live pro’s to battle it out.

Rush Poker Week In Full Swing

July 17th, 2010 by Poker Tips No comments »

Full Tilt’s ‘Rush Week’ has drawing to a close and as far as I can see its been a roaring success. In my mind the best thing to come out of rush week is the temporary crossover of normal multi table tournaments to the Rush format. It has meant that popular events such as the ‘daily dollar’, which can see up to 10,000 participants, finish almost  five times as fast.

Rush poker ring games have also seen a boost this week, with the turnout on the tables significantly more than usual as players tried to reach their bonus point goals. I don’t think it was a coincidence that I witnessed a lot of bad play this week as players who were unfamiliar to Rush ventured onto the virtual felt.

Although its almost over, this weekend will be jam packed with Rush tournaments ranging from micro to high buy-ins so make sure you log onto full tilt to enjoy the blistering action!

Introduction To Omaha

July 10th, 2010 by Poker Tips No comments »

After the explosion of Texas Hold’Em in the last few years a new variant of poker, Omaha, is starting to become more popular throughout the poker community. There are two main reasons why Omaha is the second most popular form of poker in the world today:

Similar to Texas Hold’Em – In general the rules are very similar to Hold’em apart from the fact that you receive four hole cards of which you must use two to form your best five card hand. This makes it a relatively easy transfer between the two formats.

Lots Of Action – Due to the fact that each player receives four hole cards everyone’s ‘made hand’ can change on the flop turn and river so bets are a lot more frequent. It is also rare that a raise pre-flop raise is not called by at least one player.

Full Tilt Poker Rush Week

July 7th, 2010 by Poker Tips No comments »

Between Monday July 12th and Sunday July 18th Full Tilt Poker are giving Rush Poker players added incentive to grind the quickest game in the world.
Depending on the amount of Full Tilt points you earn throughout the week playing Rush you will receive a cash bonus. They will be distributed a s follows:

Bronze (10 Full Tilt Points)

  • Earn at least 10 Full Tilt Points per day on any four days to receive $5
  • Earn at least 10 Full Tilt Points per day on all seven days to receive $10

Silver (100 Full Tilt Points):

  • Earn at least 100 Full Tilt Points per day on any four days to receive $25
  • Earn at least 100 Full Tilt Points per day on all seven days to receive $50

Gold (1,000 Full Tilt Points):

  • Earn at least 1,000 Full Tilt Points per day on any four days to receive $125
  • Earn at least 1,000 Full Tilt Points per day on all seven days to receive $250

From my experience it is possible to earn 100 ftp’s in around 90 mins when playing 3 tables of No Limit Hold’Em Rush Poker so the $50 bonus should be easy to achieve for most people.

Also, any player to reach the final table of a Rush Poker tournament during the week will be entered into a $50,000 dollar freeroll where the top prize is estimated at $12,500.

Rush Poker On Full Tilt

July 7th, 2010 by Poker Tips No comments »

Without a doubt the new craze sweeping the world of online poker is Rush Poker on Full Tilt. In a drastic change from routine ring games, Rush places all the players of a particular blind level (eg. 0.02/0.05) in a pool of players, then when you fold your hand you are instantly transferred to a new table and given a different hand, rather than having to wait for the action to finish on the previous table. Rush players are also able to ‘Quick Fold’ their cards even before the action has reached them, meaning you can play around 250-300 hands an hour on just one table! Be warned though the speed can become overwhelming at times, especially when playing more then two tables, there’s been many times when I’ve folded premium hands by accident or even called bets I didn’t mean to!

The main advantage of Rush Poker to low stakes players is the increased rakeback generated from playing such a huge volume of hands, I’ve found it is actually possible to have a small losing week and still end up in the black due to the large rakeback payment I received. I’ve found Rush Poker is also great for understanding the ABC’s of the game as players usually play hands in a standard way. I find this is because each opponent is different on every hand so it is virtually impossible to read their moves based on previous hands in comparison to a standard ring game.

Rush poker is currently available in:

  • Texas Hold’Em – (Fixed Limit, Pot Limit, No Limit)
  • Omaha Hi – (Fixed Limit, Pot Limit)
  • Omaha Hi Lo- (Fixed Limit, Pot Limit, No Limit)
